The Bridal Hairstyle Timeline

The Bridal Hairstyle Timeline

July 24th, 2014 • Posted by Taylor Stevens Salon & Spa •

You've probably thought about your wedding a few times before, but now it's actually happening and it's time to start planning. Since your wedding is supposed to be one of the most memorable days in your life, it's only natural that you want to look your best. To get perfect wedding hair, there are a few things you'll have to do in advance. Here's a quick bridal hairstyle timeline for you to follow to ensure that you get the wedding hairstyle of your dreams.
8 months before the wedding:
  • Begin to think about what type of wedding hairstyle you want.
  • Look through bridal hairstyle magazine and browse the Internet to get some ideas for your wedding hairstyle.
    • Save pictures of your favorites.
6 months before the wedding:
  • Take care of your hair. Come see us to set up a personalized hair care regimen, so your hair can look and feel its best on your big day.
3 months before the wedding:
  • Reserve your hairstylist for your wedding day.
  • Schedule a wedding hairstyle consultation with your stylist to discuss your wedding hairstyle.
    • Bring a picture of your wedding dress and any pictures of wedding hairstyles you like.
  • At the end of your consultation, reserve a trial appointment for your wedding hairstyle one month before the big day.
1 month before the wedding:
  • Have your trial appointment for your wedding hairstyle.
    • Bring with you your veil or any hair accessories you intend to wear, so you can have a better idea of how everything will look together.
    • If you don't like something about your hairstyle, this trial appointment is the time to speak up about it and schedule a second trial appointment.
    • If you like the way your trial turned out, take pictures of it from every angle to make sure both you and your stylist remember and can reference it on the big day.
    • The time it takes for your stylist to complete the trial hairstyle will be similar to the amount of time she will take on the day of your wedding, so take note and plan accordingly.
  • At the end of your trial appointment, schedule a last-minute hair sprucing two weeks before the wedding.
2 weeks before the wedding:
  • Have your last-minute hair sprucing appointment.
    • Whether you need to touch-up your roots or get a trim, now's the time to do it. Freshly cut hair doesn't always lie just right, so getting your hair trimmed two week prior to the big day will give your locks a chance to settle into its new cut.
    • Now is the time to talk to your stylist about how you can prep your locks for styling on the big day. Many bridal hairstyles work best with day-old hair, but if you have extremely oily hair, your stylist may advise you to shampoo your locks the day of your wedding.
Day of the wedding:
  • Attend your wedding hairstyle appointment.
    • Bring all of your hair accessories you've planned to use.
    • Wear a button shirt, so you can change into your dress without wrecking your do.
    • Relax and enjoy your special day.
Wedding planning can be overwhelming, especially when you're not sure where to start or what to do next. Hopefully, this bridal hairstyle timeline will help take some of that pressure off, while giving you a better sense of direction as you prep yourself for the big day. Embracing Your Natural Hair

Embracing Your Natural Hair

• Posted by Taylor Stevens Salon & Spa •

After years - or decades - of perms and touching up new growth, you may be over it. Perhaps you're a natural brunette who is tired worrying about dark roots after years as a blonde, or you've decided to stop fighting the aging process -- at least with your hair. Either way, you relish the idea of crossing off at least one task from your grooming routine.

Not so fast. While it's true that going natural can eventually mean less maintenance, the transition definitely requires preparation -- and patience. Taking a few steps can make the process a bit less trying.

From Straight To -- ?

If you've been relaxing your hair for several years or decades, you may be in for a surprise when you stop touching up your new growth. It's likely that you will need different styling tools - and techniques - to handle your wavy, curly or kinky locks. You will definitely need reinforcements to get through the initial phase of growing out your perm.

If you decide to go for the big chop, arm yourself with barrettes, clips and even showy earrings and necklaces to emphasize your feminine elements while you're growing out your hair. You may discover cheekbones and an elegant throat that you can show off. Splurge on a session with a makeup artist to create a glam look for special occasions.

If you decide to grow out the transition, be prepared to use product, especially along the line of demarcation between the permed straight hair and your natural more curly hair. Our pomade can smooth the transition at least in the early stages. A flat iron or curling iron can also help, but don't overdo it to avoid breakage. We can trim your hair to minimize the aggravation factor until your perm is completely grown out.

Color Me Not

Our stylists can be your best friends as you transition back to your natural color. We use techniques such as applying semi permanent color to your dyed hair only to blend with your roots. Another stylist technique is creating a cut and style that minimizes the contrast between your colored hair and your roots.

If you're going gray after years of coloring your hair, be prepared for a lengthy process, especially if your colored hair is dark. Natural blondes can ease the graying process by transitioning first to ash blonde, then to gray.

We can ease the transition to gray by applying an overall toner or lightener to blend the grays in with your darker hair. Another technique for going gray is to wash your hair with our special bluing or brightening shampoo. This technique emphasizes the silvery highlights in your gray hair while playing down dulling yellow tones.

Your makeup routine will also change when you return to your natural color, and especially if you allow your hair to go gray. Eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks that worked with your former color may look washed out against your darker brunette or lighter gray locks. A makeup artist can help you develop a color palate that compliments your new look.

Easing the Transition

The process of growing out a perm or ditching the coloring routine can try your patience. Our stylists can be your best friends, helping you weather the challenges of the transition with suggestions -- and strategic trims. Once you've grown out your perm or your dyed color, we can recommend a cut or style to make the most of your new, more natural look. Contact us and schedule your appointment today.

Accent Your Best Features With the Right Cut

Accent Your Best Features With the Right Cut

• Posted by Taylor Stevens Salon & Spa •

You've got the dress, the matching shoes, your favorite lip color and volumizing mascara... but what about your hair? The way you wear your hair can accentuate certain features of your face and body, and make you stand out for your loved on your upcoming Valentine's Day night out on the town.

Length

Studies suggest that men overall prefer long locks, but modern pixie and bob cuts that are cute and flirty have brought the traditional flowing hairstyles some competition in recent years. The key to hair of any length is to keep it healthy, have it trimmed often (usually every 4-6 weeks) and use cleaning and styling products that are nourishing and strengthening for your tresses.

Straight hair

Hair that has been straightened by a flat iron, for example, not only looks sleek, it also gives guys a subconscious sign that you have a good diet and overall good health. Keep the frizz away with shine products, and ask our stylist for a finishing product that's right for your hair type.

Flowing locks

This classic, luscious look gives off an air of vibrancy and vitality. Make sure your lavish locks are carefully curled and styled, however, so you can avoid frizz in wintery weather. We often recommend curling your hair with large curlers to prevent tight curls from forming. Use your hands to separate sections, and use a flexible spray to hold it all in place.

Face-framing layers

Whether you want to accent your eyes or your cheekbones, a layered look may be the right one for you this Valentine's Day. Carefully cut layers can bring out your best facial features, and our stylists can give suggestions for your specific face and body shape.

Short and sweet

Go for a side-swept pixie cut or a straight cut bob this winter if you want to accentuate your neck and shoulders. These cuts, while drawing attention to the face, also bring the eyes to your upper body. Wearing a low neckline or a sleeveless dress will also complement this look.

We'd love to help you bring your dream Valentine's Day hairstyle to life. Call to make your appointment today.
